SCREEN PRINTS

These intricate colour combinations for each artwork have been carefully planned. Using Patrick’s paintings as a reference, he develops each work by layering 10 or more colours, varied in infinite ways.

He stretches a finely woven mesh, which used to be silk but today is synthetic, over a frame on to which he paints stencils. Next, Patrick places paper under the frame and forces ink through the mesh with a rubber bladed tool called a “squeegee”. He paints a separate stencil for each colour, which protects the area not printed. Although many screen printers use paper, gelatine film, or photographic emulsion stencils, Patrick chooses to hand paint his using water resist block. Each artwork requires a high degree of patience, foresight and precision.
